This muscular but anxious broadside by Emmott, a Cambridge scientist, predicts a bleak future of critical shortages, droughts, starvation, and natural disasters once the Earth's population reaches the book's eponymous number. Whether it's water or food, population trends mean that present levels of consumption can't continue. The author is forceful, if frantic, in supplying the numbers. Forty percent of the planet is already devoted to agriculture, with governments and conglomerates in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia quickly gobbling up the remaining land. As the global population grows in number and wealth, the demand for food and resource-depleting consumer goods will rise. With a few hair-raising facts, Emmott deftly demonstrates that production is itself consumption: One liter of bottled water requires four liters to produce; a hamburger takes 800 gallons. Whereas technology helped forestall crises in the past, it now uses up the very resources it's designed to preserve. Water desalination, for instance, requires energy intensive and releases many pollutants. Nuclear power would offer short-term hope but remains unpopular. The author sees only "radical behavior change" as a viable solution but does not say how this would work. Emmott's facts are enough to shake steely optimists, though the book's Malthusian pathos could be a bit cloying even for like-minded pessimists. (Sept.)

I too read this book in a single sitting of about one hour. I also have read a few of the reviews posted by other readers. From a pure scientific standpoint I agree professor Emmott could have added more references to back up the facts he has stated.This is always advisable and I am surprised he has not done so. Despite this he has presented the material in a manner that anyone can read and digest. Yes it may be a simple format but I think it's with good reason.Overall I feel I have to agree with most of what he has said. I am glad someone has finally had the $%lls to come out and state it how it really is ( I think others have previously but perhaps in a more refined manner ). I sense he is very frustrated, gobsmacked and deeply worried by the attitude of big corporations, politicians etc to the threat facing us all. Plus I agree humanity is to blame for the trouble we are in and that we ARE truly F%*KED. I am so relieved someone else agrees with what I have been thinking for years. The fact that the urgency and scope of the problem is STILL not getting across is why I believe he has written the book in the manner that he has.ALL civilizations have come and gone. I'm convinced ours will join them but how much of the rest of the inhabitants of the earth will we take with us and will there be anything left for life to start again ?
Short, direct, take no prisoners screed that lays out our core problem - there are already way too many of us and we are only making it worse. Malthus and Ehrlich were correct, although their inability or unwillingness to take into account human ingenuity made their timing terribly wrong, thus giving us a false - and arrogant - sense of security. This should be required reading for anybody that thinks climate change is the real problem. The earth is finite, and ultimately, so is our ability to increase our numbers infinitely. It's simple arithmetic.
This isn't really a book. It's more of a powerpoint broken into a book form. Literally maybe 15 pages of content in this thing. The content is good but nothing substantive that you could not find in many better and more in depth publications.
Concise, to the point and depressing.Every other author follows the dictate of journalism school: end on a positive note. Instead, Emmons tells it like it really is.Humans are not good at dealing with this type of crisis. Much easier to go into denial. Magical thinking is much more comfortable than acknowledge that humans are the planet's most destructive predator, hell bent on bringing about the sixth major extinction on planet Earth.Given our history, and the trends of population growth (exponential), resource depletion (we are currently using 1.5 Earths) and climate change, what informed person would bet on our survival?
I experienced this as critical reading, written in a massively accessible way.When you consider the enormous challenges we are currently facing and the unprecedented changes we must make in order to thrive - massive accessibility for a mass audience is critically important.This book serves its purpose perfectly. If you're looking for counter arguments and follow-up research, there is an abundance of it available. But I think we've moved past the "research" phase and it'll serve us to start taking massive action.
It's basically an informative power point. Not an actual book; It's a waste to publish this and waste so much paper and ink on it.
It is short and to the point, packed with statistics, a good reference to quote in conversations on environmental and especially human population topics.It spells doom and gloom but then I cannot see how we can possibly avoid that when the deterioration of the planet proceeds faster than the counter-measures taken by humans.
Quick and easy book to read, however, it is baffling why Emmott printed this book with a paragraph or less per page. Overall, the book is well done and will make you think critically about the paths our world is heading.
