Review
Between Frederick Buechner’s profound autobiography Sacred Journey and Russell Baker’s warm and humorous Growing Up, Matt Matthews’ One Thousand Miles charts a compelling journey all its own through the past and the present. Beautifully written and meticulously researched, this engaging tale of a son’s pilgrimage into the heart of his father’s story is a treat for believers and non-believers, for anyone fascinated with WWII and the generation that endured it, with the metes and bounds of family and memory, with history; in short, for everyone. This is a wonderful book. –Janet Peery, author of The River Beyond the World, a National Book Award FinalistMatt taps into my own longing to understand and connect with my three-time war veteran father and my own need to make sense of that war’s enduring legacy . . . This is a “must read” for all children and grandchildren of these Silent Generation war heroes—and for families of every man and woman coming home from a modern day war zone. –Mark W. Lenneville, Chaplain (LTC), US Army, (retired).Written with insight, humor and grace, One Thousand Miles is a window through which all fathers and sons, and all who have ever had a father or a son, can see the other (and maybe themselves) anew. –Barrie Miller Kirby, author of No Such Thing as A Cherokee PrincessThis is a splendid book. –David Bartlett, Professor Emeritus at Yale Divinity School and Columbia Theological Seminary.[An] extraordinary story of an “ordinary” American family . . . For those of us who did not live through WWII the book is a gentle but insistent transport. For those who did, it will be a welcome reminder of some of the most important meanings of the overused word “honor.” –Don Belanus, Captain, Chaplain Corps, USN (retired).[S]mart, funny, keenly observed . . . There’s no epiphany here, but by following his father’s footsteps during the war, Matthews comes to understand his father and his family in new ways, and we feel enlightened by having been along for the ride. –Deno Trakis, author of Because Memory Isn’t Eternal and the novel Messenger from Mystery Matt Matthews’ superb One Thousand Miles is part history, part travelogue, part memoir—and all heart. –Deb Richardson-Moore, pastor, Triune Mercy Center, Greenville, and author of The Weight of Mercy, and The Cantaloupe Thief. One Thousand Miles is as profoundly engaging as it is beautifully crafted. Matt Matthews writes with compassion, humor, and the wisdom to let moving events speak for themselves. The result is a richly layered narrative of love between a son and his father. For both Matthews and the reader, it ultimately becomes a meditation on what to release and what to keep forever close as we move into a future that honors the love we feel for another. –Steve Doughty, author of The Man with Six Typewriters; To Walk in Integrity; The Way of Discernment Matt has written an excellent book. –Art Baiden, Major General, US Army Reserves, (retired).

A heartfelt trip as Mathews and his family seek to connect with his father by following the World War II footsteps across Europe.
Good story. I am happy to see a son and grandsons of a WWII veteran following in the footsteps of their grandfather. All families of veterans should try to save their stories.
Very well done Informative, Personal A joy to follow long trek of dedicated warriors TRUE HEROES Very glad I ordered it Retired USAF Colonel , almost 80
Nice story about his Father's WWII adventure.
a really nice book written in honor of the author's father and written in a manner that any child of an American veteran can appreciate. It is a reminder of what many of us take for granted- and the price that was paid by members of the greatest generation.
Matt has always written well and his story told here is both near and far. He does an excellent job filling in blanks of his fathers history. Matt is much the same in the pulpit and in person. Louie planted deep roots in there. Thx Matt. Susan and I still look for our fathers too. Sometimes we see them along that same seawall. Dimly though, but its enough for now. God does bless us.
A very well written book. Felt like I was on the journey with the author. Funny in some parts and very sad in others. Gave me a lot of insight into World War II and what the soldiers lived through. A very good read
