This book has somewhat of a strange niche. The writing style seems mainly geared towards a younger audience (probably between 12 and 15), but by the same token, it seems designed for people already out of the closet. I don't really believe any young person questioning their sexuality will find any enlightenment from Absolutely Positively Not. The book's strength is its humor. There were quite a few times I was laughing out loud (especially the first date). It doesn't all work though, as some of the situations seemed too over the top for me, especially everything revolving around the dance. Also, the pacing is all over the place. The first half of the book seems too dragged out, and becomes a bit formulaic and monotonous. The second half of the book, everything just kind of happens, then it ends with very little resolution. It felt to me like the author simply got tired of writing this story and was ready to move on. My biggest complaint about the book, and the reason why I don't think it's very helpful for anyone questioning their sexuality: for a great portion of the book we see Steven desperately wanting someone to talk to, who will give him advice on how to manage coming out to himself and others, and he never gets that. I guess the end is supposed to lead us to believe he finds that in a classmate, but the ending is so abrupt you have to make quite a few assumptions to feel any resolution. My other complaint is that the book kind of paints the picture that gay youth support groups are a vapid time waste that offer no real support. While I'm sure some are like that, I believe that most spend a little more time talking about gay issues and life than watching Finding Nemo or playing ping pong.

I really enjoyed this book. The author has exceptional skill with word choice. The characters are relatable and friendly. My complaint is the ending. I felt abandoned.

I read this book several months ago, but wanted some time to think about it before offering an opinion. The book has many things in it's favor. It's well-written, somewhat thoughtful, and very, very funny. Maybe on its own merits, that's all it needed to be. I couldn't help feeling though that Absolutely Positively Not provides a sort of "situation comedy" view of a teen coming to terms with his sexuality.Granted, my personal coming out took place almost thirty years ago, and the world is now a very different place. However, after reading of the teen suicides that still take place, the bullying, and the continued Dark Ages view expounded by the Religious Ridiculous, I can't help but wonder if the lighthearted approach taken by LaRochelle might be unfair to anyone living through it.Coming to terms with being sexually different, especially as a teen, involves angst, confusion, fear, and is often traumatic. While I don't feel that every book dealing with the issue needs to be a chest pounding Mea Culpa, I do think there needs to be some balance. While APN certainly shows the confusion and awkwardness of the coming out process, I felt like the bigger emotions were sacrificed for the sake of the humor.I would certainly recommend Absolutely Positively Not as a fun read. However, I would not recommend it to any teen current going through the process of coming out.

This coming out story made me laugh on every page. The characters are wonderfully believable caricatures. The entire read was charming but never sweet. The end was a beginning and made me wanting to read more from this author.

Inspirational , amazing and quite beautiful- what every gay guy and girl deserves. Kindness, awesome humour and honest self acceptance. Magical book.

This was a funny and entertaining story about a young guy trying to come to terms with being gay but living with a huge amount of denial.

I never had to hide International Male magazines or underwear catalogs under my bed. I never covered my school books with Victorias Secret ads to fool my classmates. I'm not even a boy. Or gay. But I still found this book laugh-aloud funny, sweet, and occasionally heart-breaking (in just the right spots). Though light-hearted, the story has complex characters and depth. My kind of book!

I'm a grandma but I loved this YA book and couldn't put it down. It's a short book. I square dance so I enjoyed the fact that he was a teen who loved square dancing but was embarrassed that someone might find out. Of course, he feels the same way about anyone (including himself)discovering that he might actually be gay. Here in the north suburban Seattle area we are lucky enough to have a caller, Dave Harry, who teaches square dancing in the schools. He makes it so much fun that the kids love square dancing and so there's no embarrassment in doing so. This book can help anyone realize that who you're attracted to are, likewise, just normal feelings for all human beings.
