Review

"A powerful page-turner: engrossing, funny and insightful. A vital read for these times!" - Rachel Roddy, The Guardian columnist "In this era of ugly nativism and xenophobia ascendant, Katja Meier's warm and often funny book is a tonic of goodwill. The important lessons about herself and the world that she learns are a timely reminder of why the great religions, and all the best traditions of human civilization, oblige those of us with roofs over our heads and food to eat, to shelter and feed the stranger." - Nina Burleigh, Newsweek national politics correspondent, and NYT bestselling author"Absolutely essential reading. Across the Big Blue Sea attends, with humor and humility, to one of the critical questions of our time: how to respect the humanity and dignity of those born in nation-states whose policies and politics compromise both. This is not a tale of victims and villains, nor of saints and heroes, but of women—Italian, Swiss, Nigerian—seeking to make their world a place worth calling home."- Taiye Selasi, author of Ghana Must Go"Riveting and funny... an important and illuminating book! Katja Meier brings a fresh and critical perspective to the complex issues surrounding the immigrant flows in and out of Italy. What unfolds in her quaint Tuscan village can teach us larger lessons about how to welcome new people into our communities." - Angela Ledgerwood, The Lit Up Show host and Esquire book editor"Honest, absorbing, and written with empathy and warmth, Meier gives us a much-needed insight into Italy's migrant crisis. An important read for anyone who wants to understand the plight of immigrants and the challenges and joys faced by those trying to welcome them to Europe." - Noo Saro-Wiwa, author of Looking for Transwonderland"Katja Meier writes with honesty and passion about the difficulties of working with displaced people, some of whom are not always open- for various reasons- to accepting the help on offer. She also warns us of the dangers of a one- size- fits- all approach to helping those in need and through the stories she tells, reminds us ultimately of our shared humanity." - Chika Unigwe, Bonderman Asst. Professor of Lit. Arts, Brown University and author of On Black Sisters' Street"Essential reading for anyone who thinks they understand the 'migrant/refugee crisis' in Italy and beyond. Well done!" - Barbie Latza Nadeau, journalist (Daily Beast, CNN, Newsweek) and author of Roadmap to Hell

Refugees in Tuscany's rolling hills? Prostitution on cypress lined roads? This is not a guidebook but a must read if you love Tuscany. A true story, the narrator doesn't have the usual expat experience in Italy. Yes, she lives with an Italian. And right next to an olive grove too. But her life stops being all pasta and vino when she takes on a job in a refugee home in a Tuscan hilltop town. Knowing what it is like to be a foreigner also gives her the ability to look at herself in a humorous and mildly self deprecating way while showing real insights why, despite our deepest wish to connect, we do not always manage to cross the cultural bridge. In the midst of the world-famous landscape and its many famous cities - Florence, Siena, Montalcino and Pienza in Val d'Orcia all have guest appearances - a thriller-like story enfolds. Across the Big Blue Sea is a fast-paced and entertaining holiday read but also asks some important questions (what do you do if a refugee asks for help to illegally cross a border?). If you want to meet the complex but beautiful Tuscany, that can't be found in souvenir shops or tacky postcards... then this book is for you!

I really don't like spending money for books if there's a library around, but this one was worth every penny.I just finished reading the book, which I couldn't put down. (Well, I did, twice.) The author writes well and I really hope a lot of folks get to read it. It flowed easily and everything came to life. You don't have to be interested in the refugee crisis to get involved in the story, but after you're finished, this book could very easily pique your curiosity to learn more.

As the situation in third world countries grows more horrendous, people seeking refuge in Europe are willing to do just about anything to escape. Sometimes that means selling their bodies. Human trafficking and sex working has become big business. This book gives an uncomfortable glimpse into the realities of life in a refugee home in the Tuscan countryside of Italy.

The move from idealism to reality is laid out in the stories of the author’s interaction with residents of a refuge in Italy. The Western idealism of her expectations of the young Nigerian women who arrive there is rapidly exposed in the stark disdain she encounters. Her naivety crumbles as it crashes into confrontations, untruths and a disparate set of values. Honest and gripping.

A beautiful and humorous memoir. Katja Meier easily engages the audience with her honest and straightforward account of working in a Refugee home in Tuscany. I truly couldn't put it down. Most impressively, this is the author's first book. I went through my entire range of emotions and still had the desire to speak about the cultural issues involved with friends and family. Ms. Meier has a unique international perspective than constantly opens your eye to the complicated nuances of cultural integration.

A surprising and riveting read for difficult times in a beautiful country. Perfect for travelers to Tuscany and Italy lovers who want to know how the 'refugee crisis' in the Mediterranean is affecting daily life in the bel paese.

Great book! We read this book with our book club and it lead to a really interesting discussion.

This was a very insightful and enjoyable story. It helped to educate me on a topic I'm not every familiar with. It was also quite well written.
