In theory, this book should be Awesome!!! But, some of the stories are not well thought out. Who wants to read a story about how a young girl was approached and pursued at the park to become a uniquely beautiful model, by an unknown man. When her mother says, "no," the man convinces them both and makes her famous. Great...but, should you really be reading stories, to young gals, about listening to random men who approach you at a park...to be a famous model?? In another story, a talented female architect throws a Fit on an airplane and demands that the flight crew unload her luggage, forcing other passengers to wait an extended period of time while she is accomodated and put on a different flight. I think the author may have been trying to emphasise the woman's strong and decisive personality.. But, should we be reading young girls stories that glorify throwing privileged fits on public airlines? In another story, Frida Kahlo was made to sound that she was insecure until Diego told her that she was a good painter (and the story reads a bit like: she would have been nothing without him...that's pretty oversimplified). Anyway, great idea for a book, but very very poorly organized and written.
I bought this for my 4 year old and it's perfect! Short, one page stories of kick butt women that reinforces to my child she can do anything! There are even stories about young girls, which was an added bonus because she saw the picture and asked me to read the story about the girl who is 'just like me'! I love anything that gives my child more confidence and shows her that the sky is the limit!!!
I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately the writing is just...okay. 10th grade level maybe, with vague summaries of each woman’s life. It’s not interesting or engaging.That would have made me rate it like a 3 or 4. Here’s why it’s a 2: the quote in the front of the book. “When in doubt remember: you are right.â€I think to grow you must be self-critical - to a point. If you never believe you’re wrong, then you will never learn a damn thing.
So, much like the other reviews, I purchased this book as a gift. Upon receiving it, I like the look and feel of the cover and pages, the different artists give this book a great visual appeal.Some of the stories are very good and I quite like them, but some of the stories are lacking and do not tell a very inspiring tale. A story about Catherine The Great only has a single sentence about her "great" deeds.There are famous quotes that are MISQUOTED! "One small step for man, one giant step for mankind."????I will be giving this book as a gift, that I will be editing. I was more excited for the idea of this book I suppose.
I purchased this for my two nieces, age 8 and 5. They really enjoy it. I see some people complaining that it's not really written for children, but I've had no problems narrating the text while keeping my nieces engaged. I even do pop quiz questions throughout the story to see if they're retaining the information, and they are. We all enjoy the artwork, and I've found myself reading some of the stories on my own. Yes, there is a story in the book about a transgender child, and that caught all of us off-guard, but the truth is, I'd rather my nieces know the realities of the world so they're not surprised WHEN (not IF) they meet a transgender person (and my sister agreed). By the time they are adults trans people living comfortably in their skin will be commonplace. Regardless of if you agree or not, that is our reality. The book is called Good Night Stories for REBEL GIRLS, not CLOSE-MINDED GIRLS. So if you want to shield your child from trans people, slavery, etc. I don't think this book is for you or your child. If you're open and truly want to educate your child on the great women of the world and their accomplishments, then I highly recommend this.
I understand why this book is so popular, the premise is right on point. I saw an ad for it, loved the idea, and didn't even think twice before dropping 35 bucks on this kids book, guess I should have done my research before being sucked in. This is one of those, whish I had that idea moments, where the authors are for sure going to make some good $ fast, but come on, at least try. Each page is more poorly written than the next with. I get that they are trying to squish some extraordinary stories into one page, but it reads so choppy and the amount of time I spend rewriting it in my head as I read it to my daughter so that it makes sense is frustrating. Lastly, and probably most importantly, being that this was written for kids, I am not thrilled about the way a lot of the messages are delivered. Many of these women have overcome some difficult beginnings, and while that message is important to deliver, there is a right and wrong way to explain it to a child and this book puts no effort or care into the delivery to children.
A book that should be on the shelf of every kids room, not only girls. We need to stop raising boys who know nothing about strong women!
Stay away from the Kindle Edition! The formatting for this ebook is terrible. You are not able to use bookmarks and only one display mode is available. The worse part? I cannot close the book! I have to shut down my Kindle everytime I look at the book!
