Once upon a time, you bought a guidebook from a bookstore. You thumbed its pages, compared the competition, and made your purchase. Now, all you can do is take a stab. Sometimes, your choice isn't so great, like here. I often use the Rough Guide. For international travel, it is where I look first. Not a good choice this time. How can the publisher of a city guide with 304 pages not include ONE SINGLE MAP of the city as a whole? The sectional maps are decent enough, but there's no page where the rectangles of sections are related one to another. Makes for tough planning.
Exactly what we needed, as I knew it would be following our use of the Guide to Egypt! The Pyramids was very interesting and comprehensive. The Menial palace which has at last been refurbished is amazing, albeit it costs LE100. The attendants were grumpy about visitors wandering around the beautiful grounds, muttering they were closed. it sounded like 'jobsworth', and they would not explain why. We did anyway! The gardens are glorious.
This guidebook is only fair, it lacks several crucial elements of any guidebook:1. Maps - The maps here are not adequate and certainly can't be used to navigate the city on foot or otherwise.2. Restaurants - The restaurant write ups are all of 15 words each and lack basic information.3. General updates - There is a lot happening in Egypt and this book doesn't give you a good sense of the latest policial situation.
