I've been using the Pharmacopoeia for nearly 20 years, and it has been a very useful drug reference in my outpatient emergency/urgent care practice. However, the 2018 version disappoints in several ways. The frequently consulted Pediatric Drug reference page for common medications has been deleted. Only the intravenous drug reference remains, and this is of little value since in such pediatric emergencies, the Broselow tape is universal. Most irritating is that many, if not most drugs are indexed ONLY by their generic names. Formerly, trade names were used as well. This is a PITA especially when patients only know their medications by the trade name and you aren't familiar with it. I've gone back to using my 2013 edition which doesn't have all the latest drugs, but is ever so much more user-friendly.
I typically love these books, information is concise and organized well. I think the presentation is improved. It gets 3 stars because, for some reason, some editor decided to take out the ONE CHART that I use everyday in the ER: the Pediatric dosing chart from ages 0-5 and with weight! It was arguably the best thing about the book! I can only hope that they put it back in with the next edition. As things stand, I had to copy the chart out of the last edition and TAPE IT to the back of THIS edition! If not for that, it would have been 5 stars.
No peds table for PO meds. Same great reference, just no peds table. The peds table is valuable for urgent care.
I just received my 2018 Deluxe Lab-Coat Edition this afternoon (8/27/18) and was stunned to open the Amazon Prime box, (supplier unknown) to find a book where the cover color had bled and obscured the white "Lab-Coat Edition" script entirely. This is hardly a high crime, however, the book is entirely miscut to the degree that the spine is 18 centimeters and the right cover is 17.4 centimeters and these clowns proceeded to print all 501 pages of the entire book off bias and had the gall to attempt to sell it as a first run book when it should have been sold as an imperfect edition/run or frankly, returned to pulp. The problems with this book are not "Rookie" mistakes and absolutely not a 'One Off' printing, cutting, and binding problem. My second grader observed that the book "looked funny" from her chair looking down on it on the kitchen table. Selling this book was a breach of good faith and certainly no accident. Shame on you.
gets bigger every year, but the content of the book is excellent; my last edition was 2012, so this was a welcome and long-delayed upgrade.In general, much of this information is duplicated in UpToDate, MicroMedex, and an endless series of apps, but I'm stock in the 1600s and I like to read things in books, without need for electricity or screen time.
The reason for the negative review has nothing to do with content, but has to do with the quality of the printing. The ink appears poorly printed on the pages, almost giving the words a blurry look to them from cover to cover. This is not my first Tarascon book and this is not how the print should appear. I purchased this book to use instead of my shirt-pocket edition, and unfortunately the shirt-pocket edition is actually easier to read.
Overall good, but a lot of the psychiatric medications are not listed in the index. I'm tempted to carry the 2017 until they release an updated index.
I buy this book for all my pharmacy interns to use while they are on rotation. They LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!! So much easier than going through a million data bases to answer a basic question. I love the vaccination charts, pregnancy/lactation information, and contraindications to ensure you are recommending the appropriate product.
